Week 7 Update

FAMILY FUN AS UNI WIN 5 FROM 6

The weather may have been dull but the football produced by Uni on the weekend was far from dull! The A-colts opened proceedings against West Coast and produced another dominate display with a 75 point win in wet and blustery conditions. Coaches O'Rourke and Judd have this highly skilled team improving on a weekly basis and the boys are starting to make their intentions loud and clear.

The A reserves put in a bold performance in going down to a strong West Coast team, they dominated large periods of the game without reward, once they transfer their domination of play to scoreboard pressure the wins will start to rack up. The A grade came up against a West Coast unit full of confidence, it was a must win game with both sides on 2 wins a so called "8 point game"! Inspired by the large family day crowd the boys flew out of the blocks and dominated West Coast, at three quarter time the scoreboard read 11 goals to 1 a few late goals in the last flattered West Coast.

The Thirds, Dingoes and C-gulls all travelled up the highway to tackle Whitfords. All three sides were victorious to claim a clean sweep. A great result for the thirds who after a lean few weeks appear to be back on track, the all conquering Dingoes freight train continues to take all before it and the c-gulls after dropping the first game of the season have now won five on the trot!

A grade - 12.9 - 81 def West Coast 5.10 - 40

A res - 5.9 - 39 lost to West Coast 10.10 - 70

Dingoes - 20.14 - 134 def Whitfords 2.7 - 19

C - colts - 16.15 - 111 def Whitfords 5.2 - 32

Following round 6 we still have four sides in the final 5 - A grade 4th, A colts 3rd, Dingoes, 1st and C-colts 3rd.

For a full summary of all games please see the match reports below.

A big thank you to all the parents and children who braved the weather and made it to Family day, the Auskick game was of a high skill which holds well for the Uni teams of 2020 and on! Also the bouncy castle was hit with a mountain of kids all over it. The players appreciate the support and we are hoping that next year will be bigger and better.

MATCH REPORTS

A Grade

Uni 12.9 - 81 def West Coast Cowan 5.10 - 40

An even team performance saw Uni dominate the match against WCC on a cold and windy day at McGillivray on Saturday.

The game was set up in the first half when Uni kicked 5 goals to 1 and then closed out in the 3rd quarter when we kicked 6.2 to 0.0 - keeping WCC to 1 goal in the first 3 quarters of the game.

This week the backs continued their good form, Wazza and Beardy the best of and were joined by a dominant midfield led by Grabbaz, Hoggy, Mayo and Flayva. And up forward the boys did well in blustery and at times crowded conditions as the opposition threw 2 and sometimes 3 back to defend against the strong 20+ knot southerly. Great returns to A Grade after a year out/away by Burna with 3 goals and Ippo who did well as a utility player all over the ground.

Another important game this week vs Whitfords to ensure we maintain or improve on our 4th spot on the ladder.

A Res

The UFC A-reserves played West-Coast Cowan on Saturday. In the miserable conditions Uni started with the wind and managed to have a marginal lead at quarter time. In the second quarter West Coast managed to take the lead and heading in to the half-time break there was only a couple of kicks in it.

The second half was also hard fought, however the Uni boys were not making the most of their possession when heading forward and resulted in West Coast increasing their lead. In the final term the wind picked up and West Coast boys stepped up extending their lead.

In all the score probably doesn't show how close the game was for the 3 quarters, but the boys really have to pick up their game this week against Whitfords and for the rest of the season if they want any chance of making finals.

Best: Hoddo, Quiggs, Glasford, Two-dads

A Colts

On a cold, wet and windy Saturday morning the University A colts took on West Coast Cowan at McGillivray oval. After a late withdrawal from coach O'Rourke, his two faithful assistants took over, in Matt Judd and Sam Wallace.

Even after this coaching shake up, the boys got off to a solid start in the conditions, kicking 3.4 to 1.1. Rory "Rocket" Avis-Foster kicked an awesome snap from the pocket to start the game off.

The second quarter saw more of the same with the boys kicking 3.2 and kept West Coast scoreless, giving us a strong lead at half time, which we wanted the boys to carry on with and finish West Coast off.

The third quarter saw more attack from University, with the boys kicking 5 goals, with Delroy sneaking a few goals from the pocket. However the boys got half hearted with some efforts and allowed West Coast to kick 2 goals.

The last quarter saw an improvement in conditions, and our defence, with the boys keeping West Coast goalless and kicking 3 goals themselves. Overall an impressive performance with University winning 97 to West Coasts 21.

Thirds

The 3rds took on Whitfords in a must win game on a wet and windy day up at McDonald Reserve. With inclusion of a couple new guys from each of the 4ths and 2nds, the side was looking its most balanced in a number of weeks. And despite a slow start with the wind in the 1st quarter we played our best football for the year. Our intensity at the contest was fantastic and the standard set must be the level we gauge ourselves against all year.

The second half was particularly pleasing. Our running style came to the fore and our goal kicking was fantastic. We end up 49 point winners and must continue on in that manner to have an impact against the rest of the competition. Best players were Robbie O, who played on ball for the majority of the day and got us started. Screech kicked 7 goals, which was an amazing effort given the weather, Ads was fanatic across half fwd with Harry Miller and Billy Croc and Timmy D controlled the half back line.

After a great win the boys joined the C Colts and the Dingo's for a cracking bus trip which resulted in many a cracking head ache the next morning. We play Wesley Curtain this week and must continue on our good form.

Dingoes

After coming off a big, yet unsatisfying win last week, the Dingoes were anxious to prove themselves this week against the bottom placed Whitfords.

The six goals to zero opening term in difficult conditions was a credit to the boy's willingness to run for each other, and use the corridor at all costs. The run and intensity at the football continued into the second term, crushing the Whitfords spirit by outscoring them convincingly into the breeze. The potent Dingoes' forward line rewarded their hard running midfield counterparts by barely missing a set shot all day.

The final term was the only blemish on an otherwise dominant performance. A slight lapse in concentration allowed Whitfords several scoring opportunities early in the fourth quarter. While it made little difference to the final result, we will need to ensure we don't repeat this mistake next week against a much stronger football side in Wesley-Curtin.

A solid performance all round, the Dingoes came home with a 19 goal win.

Final Score:

Whitfords 2.6.18 def by University 20.14.134

Goals: 7: Gurta, 5: Wooda, 4: Bully, 1: Smokes, Hub, Swanny, Digger

Best: Gurta, Boss, Wooda, Smokes, Lawto, Digger

C-colts

The c-gulls travelled up to Whitfords on Saturday looking to extend their winning streak to 4 games. Whilst we achieved the desired result with a 79 point win the performance was far below our best. The first qtr began promisingly when we played disciplined footy using the space outside the contests to our advantage. Lambchops set the tone with a great goal starting the scoring on the way to a 49 to 1 qtr time lead.

The second qtr was a different story as the boys sat back and began to expect everything to happen for them. Whitfords responded well to outscore us in the second qtr. A very disappointing effort and our worst qtr of the yr, the less said the better. The third qtr was a small improvement as we continued to experiment however the voice did not improve and we continued to be sucked into their game of congested football.

In the final qtr we went back to basics and looked to play to our strengths. In a much better performance we again piled on the goals. Fraser chipped in with 3 or 4 final goals depending on who you ask.

The real fun began after the game as a number of the boys hung around to think about their emotions and watch the dingoes and 3rds dispatch Whitfords. Much fun was had on the ensuing bus trip. Solid performances from all on the bus. Jasper was outstanding, Lambchops enjoyed his first visit to the Whitesands.

Week 6 Update

SO CLOSE YET SO FAR

The A colts started the day in spectacular fashion by clawing back from a four goal deficit with 10 minutes remaining to play to record a fighting one point victory over arch rival North Fremantle. This game set the tone for the remainder of the day with the A reserves losing a close one by 2 points and the A grade going down by 17 points. The A reserves had various chances to seal the game however were unable to capitalize. A similar story in the A grade where they relinquished a handy half time lead after some very promising play. The thirds poor start to the season continued with another loss to Hamersley Carine while the Dingoes continued on their merry way with another strong outing. The c-colts had the bye. For full match reports see below.

FAMILY DAY 23 MAY

This week sees the club host our first family day with various supervised kids activities and an Auskick game from 2 - 2.30 prior to the all important A grade game against the much improved West Coast Cowan. A must win game with only percentage separating both sides which will see the winner remain in the final five. The improved recent performances of the A reserves will be tested against a strong West Coast Cowan and the A colts will be out to continue their current form and consolidate a position in the top 3. The thirds, Dingoes and c-colts all travel to Whitfords, it is a must win game for the thirds to remain in contact with the finals, while the Dingoes will look to maintain top spot and the c-colts are looking to continue their early season form.

Just a reminder to keep Saturday June 20th free for the past players cocktail party more details to follow shortly.

A GRADE

Uni went into this weekends clash full of confidence and with plenty to play for. Not only were we coming off two solid wins but it was also club legend, Peter Tolls 200th game for the club.

Having not beaten North Freo in A-grade for a number of years, the boys were confident they could change that stat on the weekend. After starting the game brightly, the first quarter ended up fairly even with both teams pressuring the ball carrier with some impressive tackling. In the second quarter, Uni were on top for the majority however couldn't capitalise on their dominance, going in at half time only one goal up. North Freo were consistently dropping numbers back into our forward line making it hard to penetrate past half- forward.

The third quarter was again an arm wrestle however North Freo crept ahead by three goals at the final change. The last quarter was a very low scoring affair with North again throwing numbers behind the ball, clogging up Uni's forward line very effectively.

In the end Uni went down by 2 and a half goals. Good players on the day were the half back line of Mumf, Stewy and Beardy who battled manfully all day as well as Breeny who continues his great start to the year and Wiesey who has injected plenty of vigour into the side since his return two weeks ago. The team were very disappointed after the game, not only because they let a great opportunity to knock off North Freo slip but also because we couldn't win for Tolly. Playing 200 games for Uni is a pretty rare occurrence, but for Tolly to play his 200th game still in the A-Grade side just shows his durability and versatility as a player. Congratulations Tolly.

The month ahead is crucial for Uni as we play teams either level or below us on the ladder and need to start stringing some wins together.

A RES
In a big week for the A-Res we couldn't get over the line in a tough battle and eventually went down by only 2 points. With North Freo having 10 shots on goal in the first quarter we were a bit lucky to be only trailing by 2 goals at quarter time but just couldn't close to the gap until the last quarter when the guys had a real crack for skipper Yards 100th game. Another 5 minutes may of seen a different result but well done to Yards on a typically solid 100th game, Burna for 3 goals and a welcome return by Mitch Ippson.

A COLTS

The rivalry in colts between these two clubs is always strong due to the strong performances of both teams over the last 4 years. The games are always hard fought irrespective of ladder position. The game marked the re-appearance of colt's coaching legend Greg Shine who sponsored the boys for the day. The game started with each team kicking 4 goals in what was an entertaining opening quarter. However North Freo responded better in the second quarter opening up a 2 goal lead at half time.

Uni however fought back in the third quarter but could not put the dominance of play onto the scoreboard and still trailed by 2 goals leading into the last change. After 10 minutes of good contested footy North Freo looked to have had the game won (taking both key forwards off and coaches and co looking very smug on the bench) with a lead of 4 goals with about 10 minutes to play. However Uni finally put their good play onto the scoreboard kicking 4 goals and Sarge kicking the all important point (part of a 7 point play) from 10 meters out directly in front to snatch the game. Most promising was the fact the boys managed to run down the clock in the dying stages, something we couldn't do against North Beach.

Best Players Were: Dacry Thompson who received the Greg Shine memorial

6 votes, Rory "rocket' Avis-Foster, Tom ?cloone dog' Knight, James Smart, Blair Humphries, Stu McGukin and Damien Verazzi.

THIRDS

The 3rds took on Hamersley Carine in a game we had to win to stay in touch with the top sides. However, in what has become typical of the 3s this year, we failed to switch on from the first bounce and were punished for lazy and unaccountable football and went into the first break 5 goals to nil done. The second quarter proved when we want to do we can match it with any side. We dominated the quarter but again failed to put it on the scoreboard.

The third quarter was the same as the second with long periods dominated by Uni. Despite this dominance we were only able to kick two goals for the quarter. The last quarter was probably the worse for the year with the margin blowing out to 11 goals. Another very disappointing display by the 3s, who now sit at 1-4. Better players for the day were Harry Seaward, Rob Wylie, Walks, Kane Moyle and Hahny.

DINGOES

This week the Dingoes trekked out to Hamersley Carine, to play on the aptly named "Carine Open Space". Hamersley Carine are new in the E Reserve competition this season, so were somewhat an unknown opposition. The first quarter proved to be the teams best for the day, pilling on 5 goals whilst holding the opposition scoreless, with the UFC kicking into a slight breeze. Linga started on fire across the half back line, and the midfield was well on top creating real havoc across the ground. From there however the standard of the game dropped significantly, with the Dingoes missing a real opportunity to fine tune their game plan in the lead up to games against some more formidable opponents.

The indirect and stop start ball movement of the last three quarters showed on the scoreboard as the dingoes kicked 7 14 to Hamersley Carine 5.2 after ¼ time. The final scores was the UFC 12 17 89 to Hamersley Carine 3 5 23. Despite the one sided scoreboard the Dingoes left the ground realising they need to play a better brand of football if they wish to succeed in September this year. Better players on the day were Swannee out of the midfield, Dave Travaskis down forward who kicked 4 goals, Stralow in the ruck and philthy phil off the half back line. Plenty for the Dingoes to work on, starting this week with a massive family day bus trip to Whitfords.

Week 5 Update

GREAT WEEKEND FOR UFC AS THEY CLAIM 5 FROM 6!

The A stream sides took on Stirling at Richard Guelfi Reserve and came home with the chocolates in all three grades. The A colts were again convincing in their victory and are starting to build some momentum and play a great brand of football. The A reserves chalked up their first win for the year with an 80+ point win, which was just reward for their effort over the previous weeks! The A grade started well and went into the long break 7 goals up, however this was pretty much were it ended and they hung on to win a close affair by 9 points. The lower grades playing at home took on North Fremantle a club with considerable depth, the C colts showed great form with a convincing 7 goal win, the Dingoes were again impressive continuing their unbeaten start to the season and unfortunately the thirds went down. For full match reports see below:

A Grade 12.13 - 85 def Stirling 11.10 - 76

C Colts 14.14 - 98 def North Freo 7.7 - 49

After 4 rounds we have 4 of the 6 sides in the top 5 A Grade (5th), A Colts (equal 2nd), Dingoes (1st), C Colts (equal 2nd)

THIS WEEKEND - ROUND 5

This weekend sees the A stream sides play at home against North Fremantle in what will be a strong test for all sides. This will be a good form line for the A grade side as they chase 3 in a row and a win will see them cement a place in the top 5. The Thirds and Dingoes take on Hamersley Carine in what is a must win game for the Thirds to keep in touch with the five. The C Colts have a week off!

Have a great weekend and if you have some spare time on Saturday come down and enjoy a beer and watch the boys in action. If last Sundays Eagles game was anything to go by it would be a better spectacle than the Eagles at present! I look forward to seeing you all at the football.

MILESTONES

'Tolly-wood' to play his 200th game vs North Fremantle this weekend!!

Current President, Peter Toll, is set to play his 200th game this weekend vs North Fremantle. It is a fantastic achievement for Tolly after around 15 years of service and playing for the UFC. The forecast for Saturday is fine and 26 degrees so there are no excuses not to grab your friends and come down to McGillivray to watch Tolly and the boys take on last year's grand finalist in a season defining game for the team.

Nathan "Yards" Cattle to play his 100th game vs North Fremantle this weekend!!

The 'hard at it', consistent co-captain of the A Res is also set to achieve a milestone this weekend with his 100th game at the club. It is a fantastic achievement after suffering a broken leg in recent years and we wish him and the team all the best this weekend.

A GRADE

Uni 12.13 - 85 def Stirling 11.10 - 76

Uni held on to win our second game (away against Stirling) in a classic game of 2 halves. We were pretty dominant in the first half going into the half time break leading 10.6 to 3.3 with just about everyone on the park doing their bit.

But a solid blast from Kingsley Hunter at half time got Stirling into gear and we hit a flat spot in the 3rd quarter. We were 4 goals in front at 3/4 time and in the first 10 mins of the last quarter we could have iced the game - kicking only points in that period - we kicked 1.5 for the quarter from 10 inside 50's which allowed Stirling to stay remotely in the hunt and their accurate 4.0 for the quarter including a late goal in the last minute saw them edge close - but never close enough.

A win's a win so we'll take it but some answers will be sought when we get together to prepare for a huge game this week against Nth Frem at McGillivray. Tolly bagged 4 goals against Stirling which will make him a dangerous, in form player going into his 200th game for the club this week. A huge milestone for possibly the greatest clubman of the past 10 or 20 years - so get on down to McGillivray to see us win one for Tolly against last years Grand Finalists - and when that happens "there'll be a high time on the old town Saturday night!"

A COLTS
The Uni boys were out too consolidate their good start too the season against a very unpredictable team in Stirling. This proved the case as Stirling jumped Uni in the first quarter kicking 7 straight goals from all areas of the field to Uni's 2 goals 3 behinds. The only highlight of the first quarter was Corey Smith kicking a great goal on his non-preferred foot, on the run, under pressure, from 30m out.

At quarter time the game changed dramatically and the Uni boys went on to kick 6 goals for the quarter whilst Stirling was kept goalless. This meant we had an 8 point lead at the main break with Tommy Kaskow kicking 5 goals for the quarter and Will Higham shutting down Stirling's most dominant Player. The third quarter saw Uni increase there lead to 8 goals with Tommy K kicking another couple.

The fourth quarter saw Stirling kick the first 2 goals of the quarter but any chance of a comeback was snuffed out as Tommy K ended with 9 goals and Cal McNish managed to sneak forward for 2 last quarter goals. Overall the boys produced 3 quarters of good footy and a quarter to forget.

After quarter time we managed to dominate the midfield winning almost every centre break thanks to guys like Sarge, Alex Trombetta, James Smart and Rory Avis-Foster who were unlucky to miss out on votes. The day was capped off with a bus trip back to the AJ in which the colts all enjoyed due to the generosity of the older guys sponsoring a colt.

Thanks to Juddy's dad Robin for sponsoring us this week.

Votes:

5. Tommy K with 9 goals

4. Willy Higham doing another great job down back 3. Corey Smith- Dominant in the midfield all day 2. Harry Donovan and Mitch Catilins who were both productive up forward 1. Cal McNish and Blair Humphries

THIRDS
Last week the 3rds took on North Freo in a game we needed to win to stay in touch with the tops sides. After a couple of disappointing performances in the previous weeks we were looking for a big improvement. And the weeks training had indicated that the boys were switched on and ready to go. We started the game as we had trained all week, with great intensity but were unable to apply enough scoreboard pressure to reflect our dominance. We had seven scoring shots to two but only lead by 5 points.

After quarter time we fell away dramatically, which can only be put down to mental application as the first quarter showed we have the talent to match it with the best side. In a very disappointing day for the team we only managed to kick 3 goals after quarter time and we were smashed by 10 goals. The result continued a poor start to the season which has seen a very talented side fail to apply themselves for the full 4 quarters which is required to win at any level of footy.

There were a few standout players who really gave 100% all day. Pottsy was fantastic in his first game for the season and will now push up for 2s selection. Little Dog and Witty were about the only other ones who gave a solid 4 quarter effort. We must bounce back against Hamersley Carine this week and get back on the winners board.

DINGOES

Round four promised to be a tough match as the Dingoes took on the second placed North Fremantle in a top of the table clash. In a fiery first quarter, North Fremantle kicking against a slight breeze, the two teams could barely be separated as both looked to find their measure and establish some dominance on the game.

The second quarter saw the Dingoes step up a gear, piling on a string of goals and from this point forward there was no looking back. North Fremantle proved to be nothing but a shade of the side they used to be. They were extremely undisciplined and this hurt them as they gave away about eight fifty metres penalties through out the match.

The back six were extremely solid for Uni with Stats giving them plenty of run off the back flank. The midfielders didnt stop trying all day. A surprise move from the coaches saw Sammy the Squid in a new role on the ball. Somewhere he is sure to see more time of this year as a bag of possessions and a goal on the run saw him pick up the best on ground honours. The forwards, as usual, were on. Tony Danza kicked four goals in his come back match ably assisted by three from a strong marking Wooda and the Vice Captain Bull.

In the end the Dingoes came away ten goal winners continuing their unbeaten record and marking their authority on the competition.

PROGRESS - 4 FROM 6, A's ON THE BOARD!!!!

A good weekend for the club with 4 from 6 grades securing victories over Trinity Aquinas. A grade notched up its first victory of the season with a fine 43 point win. The two colts sides again showed their depth with both recording strong victories against quality opposition and the Dingoes continued their unbeaten run in their premiership defence. Unfortunately the reserves and thirds weren't able to make it a clean sweep for the club! Currently we have 4 of our 6 grades in the final five with the Dingoes currently sitting atop of the ladder, both colts sides in 4th and A grade in 5th place.

MATCH REPORTS

A grade

Uni 17.11 - 113 def Trinity Aquinas 11.4 - 70

As forecast, Uni A Grade registered our first win for the season with a solid, consistent and even team performance over 4 quarters to win convincingly on a hot Saturday afternoon down at McGillivray. With the temp. hitting 28c in the afternoon, we new that our solid pre-season would stand us in good stead, and all the boys were determined to work hard on both our defensive and attacking modes.

After TA kicked the first goal in the opening 45 secs, Uni took control of the game with 5 unanswered goals, but a late flurry from TA saw them grab back a couple just before the siren - something for us to work on. The second quarter was almost a mirror - with TA getting 1 on the board inside 30secs this time and also grabbing one with less than a minute to go so that at half time we were 8.5 to 5.1 but it could easily have been 10 goals to 2 or 3.

The second half unfolded in similar fashion to the first, with TA's threatening at times but with our defensive unit remaining rock solid and the mids and forwards working their buts off for 25 minutes every quarter the consistency of the effort was what really enabled us to stay comfortably in control of the game all day.

Everyone played their role and contributed in probably the most even performance by the team in the past year or so. Special mention to Johno Glasford, a 19 year old making his A Grade debut (he's fast a kicks the ball beautifully) and terrific to see some of the older guys giving him advice and support on the day that is so critical. Also, having done what I said I wouldn't do and try and name just about every player at coaches comments - I missed mentioning Shane Fleay (who was in the best players) and Stewy who had a brilliant game at half back and completely dominated his opponents thru the day - sorry guys.

Other than that - everyone played well - and we now need to maintain that consistency of effort as we go to Stirling this week which is always a difficult assignment on Richard Guelfi Reserve.

A res

Thirds

A very sluggish start to the game cost us the points on Saturday against TA's. It took the guys a quarter to switch on, but the damage had already been done. Through some very accurate kicking for an E grade game, TA's scored 7.1 to Uni's one point in the first quarter. It proved to be a lead that we couldn't peg back, despite playing the better football for the last three quarters.

Inaccurate kicking didn't help our cause and we eventually went down 7.12 to 11.6.

It was pleasing to see the way the boys finished off the game, but we obviously need to work on our start to matches.

Better players included Billy Croc who worked into the game well at centre half back, Spida who rucked most of the day, Andy Mac who was prepared to put his body on the line all game, Witty who did his best to lift the side with four goals and Kal Williams who was rock solid in the back half all game.

Dingoes

TA's showed no surprises as the Dingoes ran away with a convincing win. Accuracy in front of goal was proving a hindrance to a sexier scoreboard. UFC 14 15 99; TA 4 7 31. The coaches attempted to run the energetic Boom off his feet by playing him in the ruck and middle all game. Weather and fitness not causing any issues to the young lad who was instrumental in providing drive from the guts, earning him the 5 votes. However, the real coaching genius was Jords playing Wooda up forward who bagged 4 goals. Jordy Loxely, Filthy Phil and streamlined Andy Mellor all impressing and awarded votes accordingly. :

A colts

The round 3 clash against Trinity Aquinas was shaping up to be a close encounter, after the disappointment of last weeks loss to North Beach.

The boys were keen to turn there performance around at home, and with some new players coming into the side; with Cal McNish, Rory and Ben Gollow (the twins) and Corey Smith all debuting this week. The boys again got off to a strong start, with Darcy Thompson and Brett Millman showing some toughness in the midfield. The boys managed to convert there controlling possession and put it onto the scoreboard with a 4 goal first quarter and a 2 goal lead at quarter time. The second quarter saw the colts carry on their play in the same intense manner as the first quarter, but they were not able to capitalise. Some poor decisions, and not getting boot to ball quick enough but ourselves under pressure, but the colts were still able to come away with a 3 goal half time lead. The third quarter saw the TA's boys come out with some fight, putting more pressure on us around contests. The Uni boys were under the pump for most of the third quarter, TA's got within a goal at one stage. However, some brilliance from James Caldow got the boys fired up and put the margin out again to two goals. Caldow leaped up and grabbed a massive mark over 2 players running towards goal, and finished the set shot with a goal. Going into the last quarter with only a 2 goal lead the boys new they were in tough battle. The boys responded, a fantastic last quarter saw the boys tear TA's apart. The colts ended up 5 goal winners, which maybe should have been more with the boys missing a lot of shots on goal and Caldow dropping the ball while having a set shot on goal. All in all it was a convincing performance, and scary to think what these colts could do if they put 4 quarters of quality football together.

Votes went:

5 - James Caldow: provided an option from CHF all day, and was so hard at contests also makes the opposition every possession. James finished with 3 goals and a massive screamer next to his name.

4 - Will Higham: absolutely dominated his player, and was always pushing across to help out his team mates at contests. His attack at the ball and hardness is second to none.

3 - Rory Avis-Foster: provided some excellent run, he used his pace well and we were able to attack through him. He also finished with some goals, including a very tidy snap to finish the game off.

2 - Nicholas Haslam (Sarge): we gave him an ultimatum during the week to lift his game or have a run in C colts, and he lifted. Sarge put in an awesome effort, dominating the ruck and pushing back deep in defence to help out his defenders.

1 - Brett Millman: the co-captain was very good this week on the ball, he worked really hard and always does the little things, laying a few good shepherds.

C Colts

The boys were keen to back up last week's win over north beach this week. Unfortunately we had to play in a sandpit, such is the state of the TA's home ground. Like last week the game started evenly with TA's getting the first goal. Uni then struck back quickly. The qtr ended with the c-gulls on top. The boys continued to show the discipline asked of them in keeping the forward line open. However as TA's were determined to turn the game into a scrap our delivery to our key forwards was down a peg or two on where we want it.

The second qtr saw the creation of a cult hero. CORKE!!! With the tenacity of a honey badger and skills way better than his older brother the younger corke was a star. His forward pressure and focus earnt him hero status amongst the legions of fans watching. Our second qtr was a lot better than our first as we were able to open up the play. This enabled us to build a lead by the half time break.

The third qtr started well. TA's came at us strongly and for the first ten minutes we were able to hold them off. However as the qtr got older and we began to give our key players a breather before the last qtr TA's began to get dangerous. At 3 qtr time we held a 1 point lead, for the third time in a row. However we were quietly confident that we could regain our run that enabled us to dominate the 2nd qtr.

The final qtr was a seesawing battle, just as one side looked like they would run away with it the other side would strike back. This made for an exciting and tense finish to the game. With very little time left TA's pinched he lead from us and looked to have it won. But we were not done with yet. A quick reply put us back on level pegging. We were then able to get the winning goal with about 20 seconds left on the clock. It was a memorable win for all involved.

There were a number of great efforts on the day so many that I cant remember them all. Jake carter received five votes for his efforts at full back. Brock snagged 4 snagger rolls for the day. Vauxy won the Steve hooker high leaper award for the round.

Week 3 Match Reports

Match Reports
A Grade

Uni 12.8 - 80 def by Nth Beach 15.6 - 96

On ANZAC day Uni went down to last year's A Grade Premiers, Nth Beach at Charles Riley Reserve in game 2. After a tense last quarter when Uni kicked 4 unanswered goals to get to 5 pts down with 4 minutes to play, an off the ball incident saw Nth Beach awarded a free kick 20 meters out directly in front which effectively ended any chance of Uni snatching what would have been a hard fought victory against the winners of the last 5 A Grade Premierships. A soft goal in the last 10 sec's flattered Nth Beach on the scoreboard.

After a good start kicking into the breeze when we held Nth Beach to a 1 goal advantage at qtr time, Nth Beach threw everything they had at us in a strong second quarter when they kicked 6 goals straight to 2 goals 4pts by Uni. Outscoring an undisciplined Nth Beach kicking into the wind in the 3rd term we gave ourselves a chance in the last but in spite of the heroic last quarter it wasn't to be.

Many played well including new recruit Grabbaz (BOG), Shane Fleay, Hoggy, Breeny, Senior and Mumf - good games also came from Stewy, Wazza, Mayo and Juddy who all worked tirelessly. Great first A Grade games also to Bulle, Coops and The Boss who kicked 3 goals playing his first game for Uni.

In what is shaping up to be a very even competition, our first win is just around the corner as we take on TA at McGillivray this Saturday.

After a great win last week it was going to be a challenge re-creating that form against a north beach team full of confidence. The oval looked more like a beach than an oval with yellow sand the flavour of the day. Uni started very strongly in Q1 and couldn't put their dominance on the score board kicking 1.5 for the quarter (two also not making the distance and one not making it over the mark) from about 15 inside 50's whilst north beach kicked a lucky goal from their 5 inside 50's. The game tightened up after quarter time with no team able to score in near perfect conditions with only 9 goals score in the day.
The Uni boys let themselves down with their finishing in front of goal and delivery inside 50, which was the story of the day. At three quarter time kicking with a slight breeze Uni looked like the eventual winner and with 2 minutes to go James Caldow put Uni in front by a point. However whilst icing the clock north beach managed to turn the ball over and go forward and kick a goal from the boundary in the dying seconds to steal the win.
Some highlights of the day included two screamers from Rory Avis-Foster and James Caldow. Best Players were Alex Trombetta, Jack Lucas, Will Higham, Pete "troll wrestler" McGinnity, Stu McGuckin and Darcy Thompson in his first game. With TA's also looking like a good team the boys have a lot of work to do this week and are looking forward to a good contest.
E Grade
E Grade lined up with a solid team to take on North Beach at home. On a perfect day for football the boys were genuinely fired up for a good hit out before the game. This was reflected in our first quarter where, despite kicking against a three to four goal breeze we were able to keep North Beach to one goal and kick one ourselves. Ads was playing well in the middle, getting plenty of it and performing the one percenters, while Mozza was providing a roaming target across half forward and up the ground.
The second quarter was a tight affair; despite kicking with the breeze we could only kick two goals for the quarter, while North Beach kicked three. We went in at half time a goal down with the game there for the taking. The old adage that the third quarter is the premiership quarter rang true in this game with North Beach using the wind to pile on four goals to our one. North Beach gained some midfield ascendancy in this quarter and if it wasn't for the efforts of our backline they could have been further in front at three quarter time. As it was they went in five goals up. We also lost Walks and Witty to injury and Easy went down with a knee injury which left us with 19 men for the rest of the game.
The last quarter saw another four goals kicked by North Beach and Uni only managing one to finish the game at 12.12 to 5.4
A disappointing game, but match fitness seemed to play a part with a number of guys playing their first game of the season. Injuries on the day also didn't help. Better players were Ads in the middle and on the ball, Robbie W with run deep from defence, Mozza provided a target all day and continued to gain possessions when thrown to centre half back in the last. Anton put his body on the line all game and Harry M did his best to lift the team with his attack on the ball in the second half.
Dingoes
Uni 15.5 95 Def North Beach 7.6 48
A huge build up to this game with three of the dingoes' favourite sons playing their 100th game. Cat, Stix and Linga will be three deserving names on the 100 club board, all playing the majority of their footy for the mighty Dingoes. The day started with the three crashing through the traditional banner which read; "300 Games in Uni Colours - Lets Teach the Beach for 3 Great Fullas."
The build up perhaps took something away from our early focus with the new look (younger) North Beach side dominating the play early, kicking with the aid of the couple of goal breeze. Uni settled in the second half of the quarter to end the first with scores fairly level. After the early onslaught from North Beach, Uni were rarely challenged besides an early charge in the third quarter which was quickly quelled by the Cat after being moved to CHB. Uni ran away to a comfortable 8 goal win.
Vote getters on the day were Franko who dominated in the clearances, Philthy who's game included a vicious sling tackle of a 45kg boy right in front of the crowd, Brounie who was sent to the backline after an early goal, Cat who dominated in the ruck all day, Bully who kicked 5 snaggers and was asked if he was "the guy playing his 300th" by the umpire after looking proppy late in the game, and Stix who was his usual self from half back, setting up many forward movements and directing play. Major goal kickers were Bully with 5 and Franko with 3. Two wins from two games now so a great start by the Dingoes with the unknown TA's next week.
C Colts
Following a close lost to collegians last week we were keen to take it out on north beach who had won in the first round. The game started evenly before uni pulled away in the first qtr to hold a small lead at qtr time, in a sign of things to come our kicking at goal was the only reason we didn't hold a much greater ascendancy. The boys provided the strong running that we asked from them as we looked to run north beach off their legs. The midfield showed good discipline in holding out of our 50 enabling us to apply tremendous forward pressure.

The second qtr was more of the same, inaccurate kicking and hard running. However despite the close score at half time we knew we were beginning to get on top as north beach began to tire. Jimmy C showed courage in coming back into the game after a heavy knock to the head. beau vaux showed a lot of dash across the back flanks and along with hookey released the pressure well with disciplined kicking out of the back lines. braggy was impressive in the forward pocket as he continued to build on last week. wes l was providing good options along the centre half forward line as did the b - rock with strong leads up the guts. the smac attack continued to provide a leading target in the fifty for us.

The third qtr was the toughest of the game as north beach threatened to punish us for our inaccurate kicking, however we fought back and continued to run hard and look to punish north beach on the rebound. jake c played strongly at full back in a very disciplined approach, housey continued to play well at CHB. with uni holding a single figure margin at the break we were confident as north beach looked to be out on their feet and we were to have the wind in our backs in the last.

The last qtr began well as we put quick goals on the board. the usual suspects were all over it as the twins continued their great form, stash rowe continued to give us 4 solid qtrs in the ruck. brommey was brilliant all over the grounds and tyson and johnny r teamed up well. Great teamwork and hard running enabled us to win somewhat comfortably in the end as the final score was UFC 7.17 59 to NB 6.4 40
The final score showed the dominance that we displayed across the ground and also our terrible kicking in front of goals. The S-Mac attack would have got votes if he had kicked straighter than 3.7. A comprehensive team effort that saw a balance in structure found that was at times lacking against collegians.

Week 3 Update

So close yet so far...
Round 2 was always sizing up to be a tough round against powerhouse club North Beach. In A, A Res and A Colts all three grades were either in front or within a kick with 5 minutes to play and we lost all three, not a good day at the office at all. However there are many positives which can be taken from this as A and A Res haven't been in a winning position against North Beach for a number of years, the boys just have to convert these opportunities! The E grade also went down, however the Dingoes had a convincing 47 point victory and the C Colts had their first win for the year which is a great sign of the current depth of the colts sides. See below for match reports:
Round 3 v TA's
This week all sides play Trinity Aquinas, with the A stream at home and the E's, Dingoes and C colts away at Bill Grayden. It is a massive game for A grade with both teams yet to register a victory and we need to win to ensure we stay in touch of the 5. Show your support for the boys and get down to McGillvray to watch the boys in action.
