Week 14 Update

Clean Sweep for the A Stream and Dingoes Break 5 Year Drought!

With the students still nowhere to be seen it was another week of find anyone with two working legs and see how we go, lucky the rocks uncovered a few and the Uni boys managed to win 4 from 6. The A grade faced off against Stirling who in the prior week defeated ladder leader North Freo, in what was a close affair to three quarter time eventually saw the A grade pull away with an 8 goal last quarter to record an important 5 goal win.

The A reserves again undermanned also took on Stirling and notched up an impressive victory which was a deserved result for the effort put in over recent weeks! The A colts this week had the luxury of one reserve and returned to the winners list while an undermanned C colts came up against a very strong North Freo who took the points.

The thirds took on top of the table North Freo and produced an improved performance when compared to round one however went down. While the freight train that is the Dingoes continued their unbeaten season accounting for North Freo at Gil Fraser for the first time in 5 years in one of their closer games for the year!

THIS WEEK

The A Stream sides face North Freo in what will be tough encounters across all grades. In A grade North Freo are on top of the ladder and will be a good test to see how Uni are travelling at present. The boys will be spurred on by Simon Stewart who is playing his 100th game and a win will consolidate their position in the five. The Ressies will be looking to string consecutive victories together especially after a strong showing previously against North Freo. Hopefully the A Colts have a few students returning as they make their charge towards the finals and will be looking to continue their winning streak. The thirds face Hamersley Carine in what is an 8 point game with Hamersley Carine in the five a game ahead of Uni, a win here and September action is looking good. While the Dingoes aim to continue to take everything before them and extend their unbeaten streak to 14 wins!

MATCH REPORTS

A Grade

Uni 22.11 - 143 vs Stirling 17.9 - 111

In a high scoring game, on a perfect day at McGillivray, Uni overcame a strong first half by a quality Stirling side who had beaten the League leaders North Fremantle the previous week, to run out comfortable 32 point winners.

Our first half was full of endeavour but disposal into the fwd line let us down and we went into the half time break 3 goals down.

Confident in our ability to run out the game, we worked hard in the 3rd quarter, to first go shoulder-to-shoulder with the opposition midfield and then attacked to hit the lead and go a goal up. But a couple of late lapses saw us go into 3/4 time 2 goals down but with a fair bit of momentum.

In the last quarter our midfield runners took control and with Jones grabbing everything down forward Uni piled on 8 straight goals before a free kick was awarded to Stirling 20 metres out straight in front with 5 sec's left on the clock - to see them register their only goal for the quarter.

This week we take on top of the table Nth Fremantle at Gil Fraser in a real test of our ability - we have everything to play for as it is Stewy's 100th game and with the competition so tight that every week is a must win.

Hope to see you there.

A Res

A-res had the CUBS from Stirling this week and despite not having many wins on the board ourselves we went into the game focused and confident. The veteran and club legend of about 600 games in Reverend coached the boys assisted by the Pirate Foulksey as Erk Dog was away wooing his girlfriend at a wedding (not his... I don't think). After a pre-game rev up by the Rev and Foulksey on keeping the game simple, enjoy it and want to play for your team-mates the boys were well and truly primed to hand out a beating to the cellar dwellers.

UFC started well and continued to build on their lead throughout the game; however the game did have some flat spots where we allowed Stirling to run into their forward line with numbers and snatch a couple of goals. After another rev up at 3 quarter time and reinforcement on how we want to play the boys really turned it on in the last quarter kicking double the oppositions final score (I think. Im not good at keeping track of score). The last quarter in particular was a real credit to the boys and the win was thoroughly deserved given the many tight losses we have had this year.

Final score 15.6.96 to 4.9.33

Best: Nicco (kicked 7); 2-dads; Bando; Hoddo; Fido; Robbie-O

A Colts

We managed to field 19 players this week which was the best so far during the Uni holiday period. The first quarter saw Stirling get out to a 2 goal lead early but Uni responded to kick two late opportunist goals to be even at quarter time. The next quarter belonged to Uni, kicking 5 goals to Stirling's 2. The style of play which resulted in the half time lead was improved in the third quarter and the boys put the game out of reach of Stirling who fell apart once the score board pressure mounted and the umpires causing their manager to abuse them at three quarter time. We actually managed to keep them scoreless in the third quarter and kicked 4 goals which was great work by the boys.

The sting had gone out of the game by the last quarter and the lead remained 50 points by the final siren as both teams were spent in the hot conditions.

Best players in another great team performance were Jarred Stewart, Stu McGuckin, Harry Donovan, Jack Lucas, Brett Millman, Rory and Ben Gollow.

Thirds

E Grade took on the undefeated North Fremantle in what was always going to be a stiff test for the boys. With the effects of the uni holidays still prevalent the team selection again took on a "grab anyone with two working legs approach" as Benno, PK and Ren came in for their first games of the season while Cocky was called out of his Round 2 retirement to help out. The addition of Benno and PK also saw the thirds reach a record high for ginger representation, which on a fine sunny day was cause for concern amongst team management.

The boys set the standard early with a great attack at the footy which (after the Dingoes had successfully fired up the locals in the previous clash) North Freo were more than happy to match, setting up four quarters of strong physical football.

Uni won their fair share of the footy throughout the day, and perhaps with a bit more luck and some added polish may have been able to trouble the ladder leaders. As it was Uni turned for home only a few goals down and still a slim chance of an upset however with tiring legs and two players gone for the day the boys could not run over the top of the North Freo right bankers.

In what was a great team effort the better players on the day were Mozza who presented well all day from half forward and set the standard for physical attack at the footy, big Witty, Little Dog, Chewy, who while late to the game after dropping Friday night's conquest off at the bus stop, still managed to keep running all day and Fido. Special mention should go to Jammers who managed to talk the umpire into reversing a 50 meter penalty, something rarely witnessed at any level of football, and to Sammy Wallace, who despite having thighs smaller enough to resemble a caged chicken has managed to get a corky two weeks in a row.

Congratulations must also go to Ayresy who bought up his 100th game for the Uni Footy Club on Saturday. While new to the thirds fold this year Ayresy has provided plenty of leadership and experience in the thirds line up, not to mention plenty of hard work in the middle of the ground.

Dingoes

The rampaging dingoes faced one of our toughest tests of the season on the weekend, facing North Freo at their home ground, where we hadn't won since 2004.

It proved a good contest with North Freo's straight kicking and our lack thereof keeping the game alive for most of the day. As always with the freo teams it was a tough encounter with the odd bout of hostility as the freo boganism came to the fore, with one particularly bright-spark getting sent of on two separate occasions. Unfortunately the home side's boganitis appeared contagious with uni managing to give away six 50 metre penalties.

In the end the dingoes led all day to come home with a solid win and the UFC song had some serious volume at a ground where it has been a long time between drinks. In his final game before going overseas on a recreational holiday, Philthy Phil basically did whatever he wanted all over the ground. Bully, Wooda and the superboot Geortz were good in attack and the backline unit was at its fortress-like best.

UFC 9.12.66

North Freo: 7.1.43

Goals: 3- Bully 1 - Smokes, Backup-Plan, Cat, Hub, Macca & Geortz

Votes: 5 - Philthy, 4 - Geortz 3 - Labrat, Gazelle 2 - Wooda, Stats 1 - Cat, Clap, Broun.

Week 13 Update

Where are the Students..

It must be June and Uni Holidays as the students have bolted for the sun or mum's roast lamb is calling in the bush! With Semester 1 exams finished it has seen the annual migration of the student from McGillivray Oval to all parts of the globe, resulting in a difficult period for the club to negotiate. As such, given the man power available on the weekend the results were commendable. The A grade had at least 6 players out and faced off against third placed TA's in a must win game and fought back from five goals down to record a memorable 9 point victory to return to the five. The A reserves considerably undermanned fought gallantly before going down to TA's. The colts only able to field 17 and 15 in the A and C's respectively were impressive despite missing out on the four points. It is a credit to the guys that we haven't had to forfeit C colts games as we have done previous years, this demonstrates the strength and depth we have this year. While the lower grades also undermanned put in impressive performances winning both grades as they strive towards September action!

Following round 12 we have four sides in the final 5 - A grade 5th, A colts 5th, Dingoes 1st,and C-colts 3rd with the Thirds currently a game outside the five!

For a full summary of all games please see the match reports below.

THIS WEEK

This week again sees a number of important fixtures, starting with the Colts who are likely to be undermanned again looking to bounce back to the winners list as they both strive to lock in a top 3 position. The thirds and Dingoes face stern opposition in North Freo and will be a good test to see where each team is at. The Reserves are looking to get back on the winners list and have a real opportunity this week against Stirling. The A grade competition is unbelievably close with 1 game separating 4th and last so each week is vitally important, Stirling are just outside the five on percentage and after defeating North Freo last week are in good form. It is shaping up to be a great contest so get down and support the Green Machine in must win game as they look to cement their place in the five!

MATCH REPORTS

A Grade

Uni 14.9 - 93 def Trinity Aquinas 13.6 - 84

Down at TA's cow paddock in Como on Saturday the Uni boy's had a terrific come from behind, fighting win against the 3rd placed side.

With the boys taking a quarter or so to get used to the difficult underfoot conditions Uni found ourselves down by 5 or 6 goals midway thru the second quarter. But from then on hard work, persistence and a willingness to run combined with better execution and constructive talk from every player in the 22 saw Uni work its way back into the game by 3/4 time.

The last quarter was a cracker with Uni hitting the lead for the first time in the match with 7 mins to go. But then TA struck back with a goal to go 3 points up with less than 5 mins on the clock. That was the sign for the boys to dig deep and they did pushing the ball deep into the fwd line to allow Jones the opportunity to mark on an accute angle - go back and slot a banana kick thru to reclaim the lead then a minute later snap another to seal the game.

A magnificant team effort from every player this week. This week we take on Stirling (who accounted for Nth Frem on Saturday) at McGillivray in another critical game. Hope to see you there.

A Res

Once again the A-RES were as consistent as a cheap custard and delivered only two quarters against top of the table TA's.
After matching it with them in the first quarter the newly formed A-RES (a lot of changes) were then over run in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
Winning the 4th quarter was a little consolation but in the end the Res went down by 8 goals in a disappointing day out.

Good players were 2 Dads and Kal Williams.

A Colts

The boys only managed to get 17 players on the field this week due to3 players missing through injury. We were up against TA's who are top of the ladder in A colts with their only loss against Uni in round 3. Uni started in fine fashion having the better of a first quarter shoot out with Uni kicking 6 goals to TA's 4. The second quarter however had TA's having the better term kicking 3 goals to our 1 allowing TA's too enjoy a 7 point half time lead.

The second half tightened up with both teams wasting chances to build a lead. In what was a epic final quarter Uni fell 5 points short of what would have been a fantastic win against the odds. Many positives can be taken from the loss as they lads played a great style of running footy to get themselves back into the game and many back line players playing on much larger quality forwards. Well done to Jules Burzens who played his first game for A Colts.

In what was a good term effort it was hard to determine votes but the best players were. Nathan Stewart who came down from Subiaco reserves, Cal McNish continuing his great form, Angus Merrideth, Tom Kaskow and the Troll Wrestler aka Pete McGinnity returning from a broken hand to kick 3 goals. Stirling next week who like their A Grade can turn it on on their day.

Thirds

This week the 3rds took on TA's in a very important match in the context of our season. Coming off a good 6 weeks of football, we were looking to continue our recent good form at home. The team had a number of changes this week as the uni holiday period took full effect. Thanks must go to Fido and Quigs for doubling up after the seconds match and Blair for doubling up after the morning colts match. All three of these guys made valuable contributions with both Fido and Quigs kicking 3 majors a piece.

Played in perfect conditions we went into quarter time a goal down after dominating much of play. TA got the jump on us at the start of the second quarter racing to 3 goal lead. The boys then clicked into gear kicking the next 4 goals to head into half time with a six point lead. With the first two goals after half time it looked like we would run away with the game. To TA's credit they hit back with the next 3 goals to take a two point lead into ¾ time.

With the game on the line we ran out the game considerably better and keep TA scoreless while adding 3 goals our selves. The win puts us at 6 and 6 of the season, which is good position after being 1 and 4. Better players for the day were Labrat at CHB, Moorey who provided a heap of run out of the back pocket, Witty who dominated the ruck and around the ground, Kaneo who ran his guts out and Inspector Gadget Blue who was great in the back pocket.

Dingoes

E Reserve vs Trinity Aquinas

After a cool 9 years between drinks, Lewie was finally able to notch up his 100th game against a vastly improved Trinity Aquinas outfit. This was to provide plenty of motivation for the boys although perhaps the emotion of the occasion was too much for us as poor disposal crept in early. Trinity Aquinas were able to get the jump 1.7 to 0.1 and if not for poor efforts in front of the sticks could have put the game out of reach by quarter time. The Dingoes however, have shown a timely ability to respond when challenged this year and a strong second quarter ensured we headed into the main break with a slender advantage. It was hammered home to the boys by one of the many coaching talents on display, that our fitness and hard run would leave TA's wilting in the second half.

An increase in centre clearances set the tone for an improved second half performance with the likes of Boom, Stats and Roids able to get first use of the footy. This was aided by a strong defensive effort with Cat ably supported by Linga and Kracken. The game was still well within the balance at 3-quarter time but the Dingoes forward line pressure meant that the ball rarely left our forward 50 in the last quarter. This was the result of the success of our defensive wall, with Jingles able to use his spindly frame to good effect. Our forward line, which had been well contained for the most part of the match, came alight and we were able to run away comfortable 40-point victors. It was perhaps not the 4-quarter effort we were looking for but it was great to have a win for Lewie and the match gave us the opportunity to test ourselves ahead of a much sterner challenge against North Fremantle next weekend.

UFC 12.8. 80
TA's 5.10. 40

Goals: Roids 3, Pricey & Boom 2, Geortz, Tradey, Wooda, Bully and Lawto 1

Votes: 5: Jingles & Cat 4: Boom 3: Roids & Swannee 2: Stats 1: Linga, Kracken & Tommy Clapin.

C-colts

For the third match in a row the mighty c-gulls marched onto the field significantly undermanned. However the increased game time given to those boys who have hung around for the holiday over the last few weeks appears to be showing dividends as the c-colts put up a good fight against TA's. Last time the two teams met Uni won by the slightest of margins, with Julian Berzins kicking the winning score in the dying minutes (a goal that is often wrongly attributed to his c-gull look-a-like Chris Bragg). TA's set out to avenge their previous defeat, coming out firing, kicking 5 unanswered goals in the first quarter. At quarter time Sam Macpherson was moved onto the dangerous TA's forward and with the assistance of James Maddock and Tim Shakespeare, helped to stem the flow of opposition scoring.

After half time Uni rallied and kicked a quick goal to start the 3rd term. TA's reacted quickly kicking a goal of their own an began to push numbers into their backline, the memory of the 5 point defeat earlier this year obviously still fresh in their minds. Uni looked to be the better side in the second half however the boys were unable to move the ball deep into the attacking 50 enough to reclaim much of the ground lost to TA's in the first quarter. TA's ended up winning by 38 points; however the dogged 4 quarter performance by the all of the boys was very encouraging with many players improving with each game.

Week 12 Update

Another Bad Week at the Office!!!!!!

Things didn't get much better for Uni this week, both weather wise and results wise. Again only two teams were able to come away with victories with A-Grade and A-res both narrowly losing their respective games.

A grade - Uni 10.12 - 72 def by Nth Beach 12.12 - 84

A res - 6.9 - 45 lost to Nth Beach 9.5 - 59

A colts - 10.6 - 60 beat Nth Beach 6.7 - 43

Thirds - 5.6 - 36 def by Nth Beach 12.7 - 79

Dingoes -9.10 - 64 def Nth Beach 4.6 - 30

C - colts -1.1 - 7 lost to Nth Beach 13.20 - 98

That loss for A-Grade sees them slip to 7th spot on the ladder. However, only one game separates 3rd from last so every week now is so critical. The Dingoes continue on their merry way and it was good to see the A-colts get back on the winners list. Hopefully the C-colts can get some numbers back and notch up another win this week. The thirds still sit one game out of the 5 so some wins in the next couple of weeks are crucial

MATCH REPORTS

A Grade

Uni 10.12 - 72 def by Nth Beach 12.12 - 84

On a torrid day against the leagues top side Uni went down by a narrow margin with the game in the balance right up to the last 5 minutes.

Going with the wind in the first quarter Nth Beach scored 5 goals to 1 and Uni returned the favour in the second quarter to go into half time at 6 goals a piece. In the 3rd quarter, going into a stiff breeze Uni got on top early and kicked away to a 2 goal lead mid way thru and held the lead up to the 18 minute mark of the quarter when Nth Beach kicked 4 late goals including 1 after the siren to take a 3 goal lead into the last.

With Burner on the way to hospital in an ambulance at half time after a head high collision, our ruckman Marsh on the side with a suspected broken leg, Hoggy out of action and Stewy running around looking like a Mummy having had his head split open in the 3rd quarter we had our work cut out even with the aide of the breeze.

Direct play and accurate kicking saw Jones bag 2 in the first 3 mins with another from Crud to follow to narrow the margin to less than 1 goal and from then on it was an arm wrestle as Nth Beach refused to give up the lead and the Uni boys worked to bring the ball into the attacking zone.

But ultimately it was not to be in spite of the valiant efforts of all players. Particular mentions to Grabbaz (BOG), Juddy, Mumf, Krudd (at his electrifying best), Breeny, Flayva and Brabbaz who all played exceptional games - every player contributed on the day and was gutted to lose another close one to last year's premiers. We must learn, collect ourselves and move onto this weeks game vs Trinity Aquinas which will be another tough encounter.

A Colts

With the holidays hitting the squad hard for numbers due to the Bali contingent off to spend K-rudd's stimulus package overseas. We had only 18 players for the day which was helped with north beach only having 20. In wet windy conditions the colts played some of their best team footy for the year and produced an excellent four quarter effort against a team who had only lost one game for the year. The eventual margin was 4 goals.

Well done to Jake Carter who played his first game and held the dangerous North Beach Full Forward for most of the day. Best players were tough to determine due too everyone contributing with 100% game time (except eyrsey who got a yellow card), compared to our normal 6-7 man bench.

Votes were given to 5-Chips Verrazi, 4-Brett Millman, 3-Calium McNish, 2-Mitch Cattlins and 1-Blair Humphries. Big game this week against TA's who are top of the ladder.

Thirds

North Beach 12.8 - Uni 5.6

There was a smaller squad to pick from for thirds thanks to the Uni break, but we still managed to put a handy side on the park for a big game against North Beach.

A win would have given us a big chance of pushing up into the five, but we were unable to sustain a four quarter effort and eventually went down by seven goals.

The North Beach ground made the windy conditions even trickier and we lost the toss and had to kick into the howling breeze in the first quarter. We did well though restricting North Beachs' scoring opportunities while being able to push forward and score ourselves.

We didn't make full use of the breeze in the second quarter. We controlled the play, but couldn't capitalise going forward.

We matched it with North Beach for 10 minutes in the third quarter, but a no show due to car trouble before the game and the loss of two players to injury in the first half left us with only one on the bench and the lack of man power began to take its toll in the second half of this quarter, with North Beach posting five goals in this quarter to set up the win.

Despite the injury setbacks Uni never gave up, but in the end we just couldn't match their disciplined style of play for a four quarter effort. The signs are there though that if we get to the finals we are going to give the top sides a big shake.

Final score was 12.8 to 5.6. Better players were Captain Kane Moyle, Labrat at fullback was good all day, Witty in the ruck, Adam Stanford on half forward and the ball and Mozza at centre half forward provided a target and a contest all day.

This week is a must win if we are to be any chance of playing finals footy.

Dingoes

E Reserves

The Uni Dingos were looking at spending a few nights in the dog house on Saturday Morning (literally. as it is only Stralo who is physically in the dog house). Firstly, playing North Beach at North Beach isn't exactly a Dingoes cup of tea. Secondly, playing football in 30 knot winds is not a dingoes cup of coffee, and thirdly with big outs, dingoes rushed in, and one of the star coaches missing it would seem the dingoes were as confused as a blind lesbian in a fish market.

A North Beach person who attempts football (as they cannot be categorized as football players) may have felt an upset looming. Unfortunately for them, the dingo juggernaut pranced along unfazed and unworried. With Slattery dominating off the half back flank, the full back line of Law, Kraken and Hoff as solid as a virgins first lap dance, and Stralo winning every tap, a Dingo lead at half time was inevitable. A small lapse in concentration in the third quarter saw North Beach pile on a few goals to come within 10 points at the final change but it was again the strong running and silky skills that brought home the bacon for the Dingoes. Congratulations to Stix Alleymore and the magnificent, self proclaimed, super coach Lawto for stepping in for the coaching roles and filling those positions like a Kama Sutra expert.

C-colts

Friday night came along only to see the coaches calling any player they could, fortunately we were able to get 16 c-gulls to make the trip up to NB, a good sign during the uni break. The game was played in atrocious conditions on an only slightly better ground. Having to start the game with only 13 on field (NB is a long way away after all) meant we were always going to be up against it early. To the boys credit they played well and held NB out for about 10 mins, only for NB to promptly jump away to a 12 goal lead at half time. The second half showed a huge improvement as we looked to hold onto the footy and use the extra space available.

The improvements showed on the scoreboard too. Whilst NB went on to win by about 80-90 points, the second half showed a huge improvement. Any game without a forfeit for the c colts during the break is always a good result, so mentions to the big keats who played with suspected cracked ribs (and a raging hangover on all accounts) and to brownie who cam back from a broken collar bone 2 weeks early. also to pretty much every other player as everyone seemed to have a flu, or was buggered from mid year rotto.

MATCH REPORTS

A Grade

On a wild, wet day at Dalkeith oval Uni went down to Collegians after going into the half time break 4 goals down.

The half time lead Collegians had squeezed out proved too much in the end to claw back - after getting to within 2 kicks in the early / mid part of the last quarter, two separate 50m penalties helped Collegians 1st get out of trouble with us pushing deep into the fwd line and then kick a steadying goal to help them move on to defeat us for the second time this year. On the day we were outplayed in the windy conditions and we now face North Beach at home next Saturday with every game critical from here on.

Again, as a result of other game results we have managed to stay in the 5 - in 5th spot so we are now equal on 4 wins with about 6 other sides. Talk about a close comp. We need to get back on the winners list next week and will be giving it everything we have against last year's premiers.

A Res

The A-Res side once again suffered from a quarter of lapsed concentration which seems to be a recurring theme - this time letting their guard down in the last quarter to lose a hard fought game.
After being up for most of the game Collegians kicked 5 goals to 0 in the final term to end up winning by 3 goals.

Best players were: Peetzah, Si and Johnno Glassford.

A Colts

On Saturday we took on collegians who were looking like the form side of the competition. The boys struggled too get into the game and struggled with the blustery conditions combined with the dalkeith oval surface. After a respectable first quarter collegians increased their lead over the next two quarters to 6 goals which remained the final score. The boys showed some fight in the last quarter but missed opportunities snuffed out any chance of a comeback. Best players were Jack Lucas, Blake Bunkeild, Mitch Catlins, Cal McNish

Thirds

E Grade had another good win on Saturday with the team really starting to gel after an indifferent start to the season. We came up against Wembley who are yet to win a game this year. In tricky conditions Uni dominated the play for all four quarters, but our failure to capitalise early kept Wembley in touch for three quarters.

We had the chance to put the game beyond doubt in the third quarter, but the conditions and some easy misses saw us kick 1.7. It all came together in the last quarter and despite the rain there were some very good passages of play. Our tackling was a highlight and the use of handball to run and carry the ball was also pleasing. The final score was 10.17 to 8.6.

Better players were Morey who started in the back pocket and then went onto the ball in the second half, Sammy Wallace, Tonic, Mozza and Blue. We have another big test this week when we take on North Beach away.

Dingoes

After the first half of the year, the Dingoes are sitting on top of the E Reserves ladder, undefeated, 2 games clear of the second placed team. To begin the second half of the season we took on Wembley at McGillivray in what we hoped would be a match in which we would easily consolidate our game plan. Instead we ran into a much improved, highly skilled and energised opponent who was well prepared for their clash with the old rival.

As a result the first half was a lot closer than we had planned. Wembley got the jump on us and were 2 points up at quarter time, and by the half, the Dingoes had only managed to develop a 9 point advantage. With a number of less experienced players in the line up, the Dingoes rallied around the older brigade and put together a solid second half, improving significantly on the first 40 minutes. The result was a handy 6 goal win, UFC 10. 10. 70 to Wembley 5. 2. 32.

Full credit must go to Wembley, who deserve more respect then their ladder position displays, and who prepared immaculately for the traditional arch enemy clash. Best players for the Dingoes on the day where "2 shots" Hubbard who is in career best form and Tony Danza who kicked 6 goals, 4 in the first half to keep the UFC in the game. Other effective players where Eddy the Boss, Franko, the Kracken, Hoff and Luke the physio.

On a final note, the game on the weekend was Matt Franklyn's last game for the UFC before he heads overseas for an indefinite amount of time. On behalf of the Dingoes, and the whole UFC, I want to thank Franko for his service to the club. He has been a fantastic player for the club over a significant period of time, notching up his 100th game last season. He is uncompromising in his attack on the ball, and has developed into a great leader at our club. Thanks Franko, all the best in London,. Hope to see you in UFC colours again in the future.

C-colts

This week saw the c-gulls look to extend their winning streak to 8 games. However being a bit undermanned and against the top side in collegians it was not to be. The wet led to some poor skill errors by the gulls and collegians were good enough to punish us at every opportunity jumping out to a six goal first term. The second qtr was more of the same as we continued to turn the ball over. As the qtr went on we began to show signs of improvement but struggled to get the rewards we deserved.

The third qtr showed further improvements but we still had trouble getting the ball between the big sticks where as collegians seemed to score every time they went forwards. The accountability of the team improved during the second half. At the final change the game was beyond our reach so we looked to find some positives in the last qtr. To the boys credit they never stopped trying and perhaps even increased their intensity at the ball.

It is always difficult to maintain your intensity each week when you continue to play weak teams and rack up 20+ goals and 100 pt wins. However we have now seen where we need to be in terms of intensity and skills come September. The next month will prove to be a tough one for the c-gulls as we battle the annual uni holiday period against the other teams in the top 5 before running towards the finals against the bottom four teams.

Week 10 Update

4 Wins, a draw and a bad loss!

A costly loss for the A grade boys where the top 5 sides all lost to bottom 5 sides which just shows how even the A grade competition is this year. A win would have put the boys a game clear in third position a definite lost opportunity. The Reserves stole defeat from the jaws of victory, well a draw, however it was one they should have won after being 3 goals up with 5 min to go! The colts sides both had strong wins in particular the c-gulls with a lazy 139 point victory, the boys are in form. The thirds continued their charge towards the five with a hard fought win over CBC and the Dingoes in their grand final replay also accounted for CBC to continue their unbeaten run.

A grade - 6.12 - 48 lost to CBC 14.6 - 90

A res - 9.7 - 61 drew with CBC 8.13 - 61

Following round 9 we have four sides in the final 5 - A grade 4th, A colts 2nd, Dingoes, 1st and C-colts 2nd with the Thirds current form having them knocking on the five a game out!

MATCH REPORTS

A Grade

Uni 6.12 vs CBC Frem 14.6

The score pretty well summed up our day. Missed opportunities early when we had some control of the game in the first quarter and poor execution - that seemed to get worse the longer the day went on (eg 5 straight points in the 3rd quarter) cost us any chance of consolidating our spot in the top half of the table.

No excuses though, we must work hard on our skills and fitness, and make sure we are able to break out of bad patches when they inevitably do happen.

Bizarrely, in the A Grade games the top 5 all lost to the bottom sides - so we remain in 4th spot on the ladder. Which makes this weeks game against traditional rivals Collegians (who beat top side Nth Fremantle last week) a ripper and one we must win with the John Prior Cup up for grabs.

And afterwards we will celebrate our win at the gathering of Past Players and Supporters Cocktail Party on Saturday night.

See you at Dalkeith Oval and afterwards for the Past Players & Supporters Cocktail Party - all welcome. Details on the website or RSVP to Rako or Tolly.

A Res

Uni A res V CBC at the sandpit started pretty typically of the A res season to date with CBC kicking the first couple of goals. However the Uni boys rallied late in the first term to come into the first break on par. Erk dog had got the pen out during the week and wrote down some team rules for the boys to take home and read before they went to be bed every night... the main messages being accountability, talk, running to support your team mates and having confidence to back yourself and your team mates.

After reinforcing the message at quarter time the boys responded playing all over the sand dwellers for the next 2 quarters. Assisted by a few easy misses by CBC on goal Uni came in too the final break up by about 3 goals.

The boys started the last quarter well however in the last 10mins we stopped what we had been doing well for the majority of the game. CBC came back and the end result was a disappointing draw.

We can take a lot out of the game as we can for most of the games this year. When we play to our team rules as Erk outlined for us we are a very competitive team in what is a close competition. However it's playing to those rules and keeping that intensity up for 4 quarters that we need to work on.

Best were the Stant, Glas, Quigs, Pizza

A Colts

With the disappointment from the loss before the bye the colts were fired up to make amends and that was evident from the arrival of the players through to the warm up. The game followed a similar pattern throughout with each quarter being hard fought and competitive but with Uni extending the lead by 1-2 goals each time. The boys ran out 8 goal winners which could have been larger owing to several missed chances. It was a great team win with every player contributing well and playing for each other. Well done to Angus Merrideth and Matt Coyte who played their first game of A colts.

Best players were Eyresy the "bull" at CHB who did not only beat his opposition but provided great drive from the backline. Weapons up forward provided great hands and finishing, the twins Ben and Rory off the wing were very productive. J-rad Stewart one of our Claremont boys was great up forward as was Blair rotating through the middle and back pocket. Finally Will Higham on the back flank was again hard at it setting the standard for the boys to follow. Big game v Collegians so try get down early and support the colts as Collegians will be seeking revenge for last time.

Thirds

E Grade recorded its best win of the year on Saturday. We went into the game against CBC as underdogs and needing a win to keep our season alive. The match was very much a grind all day with only 13 goals kicked for the match. CBC got off to a good start, but Uni fought back well in the first quarter to limit their scoring opportunities, although we struggled to kick goals ourselves. The second quarter was a dour struggle and again we had the majority of the play, but couldn't capitalise due to skill errors. The boys were asked for a special effort at half time and certainly delivered with everyone giving 100pc to get us over the line in a very gutsy eight point win. The final score was Uni 7.8 to CBC 6.6. The back six deserve special mention with CBC kicking only 2 points after half time.

Better players were captain Kane Moyle who played in the midfield, Albert Clarke who was outstanding in the ruck in the second half, Fido who was at his consistent best in the middle, Walks who dominated at CHB and Harry S who was consistent all day on his half back flank.

Blocka at fullback and Harry M at CHF also played well.

Dingoes

The first round of fixtures finished with a top of the table clash between the undefeated Dingoes and old grand final foes CBC. With the dawn of a perfect day for football, and a strong team on the park, the Dingoes were confident but not complacent - spurred on by the fact that two icons of the squad, Timi the Gazelle Donisi and Tom Maccanui McCarthy were playing their 100th games.

Stix was able to share in less than 30 seconds of this on field occasion as he copped a high hit in a tackle which left him with a broken nose and concussion. While the physio tried to stop the torrential flow of blood, Uni rained a torrent of goals on the opposition, skipping out to a 4 goal break with Macca and Gurta dominating up forward, and the midfielders winning just about every centre clearance. CBC steadied, and replied with three of their own (with a bit of luck courtesy of a dodgy decision and 50m penalty) to narrow the gap to just under 2 goals at quarter time.

The second quarter was more of an arm wrestle - the Dingoes having the most of the ball, but let down by some uncharacteristically poor finishing. The Boom recruit was one whose skills were untarnished and Wooda was giving a strong option at CHF, but the quarter was further blemished by a behind the play incident which saw Stats stretchered off. Uni focused their aggression on the footy, but were unable to stretch their lead - Cheekwee and Gazelle providing a much needed pressure release running out of the backline.

In the third, CBC strung some goals together which saw them draw to within a kick. Re-Enter the Stat man, whose hardness at the pill and two goals in as many minutes restored some breathing room. Macca shifted into the ruck and combined with the Squid to good effect, while Gazelle proved there was plenty of run in the legs with a shift up to the wing.

Uni got the first couple of the last quarter, and at that point CBC seemed to concede defeat, dropping a loose player back who was unable to prevent the Dingoes adding another few before the final siren. A satisfying win which was more challenging than the final 7 goal margin suggests, with the two celebration kegs at the Gliddon Residence thoroughly deserved.

University 14.8.92 def CBC 7.4.46

Goals: 4: Gurta; 3: Macca; 2: Stats, Chrisso; 1: Wooda, Franko, Digger

Best: Macca, Gazelle, Boom, Cat, Stats, Gurta, Wooda and Cheekwee

C-colts

Another big win for the boys by 139 points, travelling beautifully at present!

A disappointing result for E Grade on the weekend. We travelled to West Coast for a game that we had penciled in as a should win. It was a frustrating day with Uni having the majority of the play throughout the game, but skill errors cost us and we couldn't capitalise on our possessions.

West Coast appeared to have dropped a few down from their A Res side and their cleaner ball use stood out on the day.

Again we struggled to kick goals and missed some easy chances early in the game which could have kept us in touch. The last five minutes saw West Coast kick three or four goals to win by 10 goals in the end. Better players were hard to find for Uni, but Fido showed the level of desperation and hard football required, while Witty rucked well all day. Walks was also good in defence.

Dingoes

This week Uni played the bottom of the ladder West Coast Cowan away at city beach oval. The dingoes ran out on the field ready and willing to give all they have, pilling on a 5 goal lead whilst holding the opposition scoreless throughout the first quarter. This later proved to be essential in securing the victory as each quarter for the remainder of the game was an arm wrestle on the scoreboard.

Although not boasting our most experienced team, uni lacked commitment for the ball at times and struggled to follow the game plan which ultimately allowed West Coast several scoring opportunities. By the end of the match the scoreboard was the tightest it's been this year, with university only managing to win by a 5 goal margin. Although not the most satisfying win, Uni are looking strong with 8 wins and 0 losses coming into a huge game this coming round against CBC in a Grand Final replay.

The final score was UFC 12.5-77 to West Coast Cowan 7.5-47.

C Colts vs Melville

After such a dominating win last week against Wesley Curtin, the C Gulls were in danger of becoming complacent this week against another lower ladder opponent. The first quarter started well with the C Gulls maintaining the majority of possession. Josh Smith provided a strong leading target across half forward, finding plenty of space even within the small confines of Melville Reserve.

The second quarter started much like the first. Although Melville weren't troubling Uni on the score board, they lifted their physical presence on the ground and a few quick goals may have seen them take the momentum into half time. Just as Melville were making their run into half time, three of the C Gulls that had been central to the success of the team over the last month were forced from the field with injury. Fortunately, the depth in the C Gulls squad was able to cover the early losses with Luke Pegrum, Toa Mantaras and Sam MacPherson rising to the challenge of playing a more defensive role.

In the third quarter the C Gulls worked hard on their half time pledge to lift their physical presence on the field and the results began to show on the score board. Fraser Ricupero continued to swoop on any disputed ball inside the attacking 50 like a persistent Rotto gull, bagging himself 4 goals for the game. Beau Vaux, Matt Coyte and Simon Thompson continued with their consistent form to date. James Clarke relished the opportunity to have a longer run on the ball, working well around stoppages to win the ball off the ground.

The final score: Uni - 15.13.103 def. Melville - 6.7.43

Votes: 5- Vaux 4- Clarke 3- S Mac 2- Coyte, Tommahawk 1- Pegrum, Smith

MATCH REPORTS

A Grade

Uni 15.9 - 99 def Whitfords 11.12 - 78

This week we faced a desperate to win Whitfords on a hot day at MacDonald Reserve.

After an even 1st quarter with both sides trying to gain the advantage, Whitfords kicked clear to a 3 goal lead midway thru the second term. To the great credit of the team we were able to shift the momentum in the last 10 mins and kick 3 goals to go into half time 6 goals a piece. We thought that coughing up a good lead might deflate the opposition so we went out determined to work it hard for the first 10-15 minutes. The result was 4 goals taking the tally to 7 unanswered goals in a 20-25 min period. Great stuff!

The rest of the 3rd qtr and the last was a battle from one end of the ground to the other but we managed to keep 3 or 4 goals clear at all times.

Great games from Jonah, Grabz, Flayva, Ippo and Boss - and special mentions to Juddy who kicked 2 goals and layed 6 or so critical fwd line tackles, coming into the side late as an emergency (playing with a broken hand). Also chucky and stew who normally play back who chimed in with a couple of goals each and Mayo for copping a rib breaking collision but carried on regardless to also be one of our best.

Great win - we'll enjoy the break this weekend and continue our journey against CBC at Buzzacott Reserve next week.

A Res

A disappointing day for the ressies with a loss to Whitfords. The boys lacked accountability early and failed to recover from this. The trend of poor starts is worrying and something we must address. The backline boys were terrific especially early when under fire with Peetzah and Farry playing well, Robbie O laid some viscous tackles and Two-Dads was good on his wing. There is good depth and talent in this side it just needs to ensure it maintains its accountability and gets some confidence a win is just around the corner.

A Colts

Round 7 vs Whitfords. A colts

The team came into this round with a lot of confidence, having won the last few games on the trot they were looking to have a good game. Apart from some late withdrawals this was the case, kicking away in the first to go in at qtr time up by around 15 points.

The second term was an improvement on the first, with more accurate kicking allowing scoreboard pressure to be put on whitfords, however costly turnovers and loose marking of players all around the game allowed whitfords to stay in the game.

The uni boys tightened up in the 3rd qtr, getting the lead out to around 30 pts before allowing a late goal to whitfords, going in a 3 qtr time full of confidence and 23 pts ahead. It seemed they went in with too much confidence, whitfords burst out of the blocks in the final term, kicking 5 goals in 10 minutes, and the uni boys were basically only onlookers to this onslaught. To their credit they fought back, not letting whitfords score anymore goals, and slugged out the final 10 mins of the qtr. With 3 mins to go Tommy K kicked truly from 30m to put uni 2 pts down.

However it wasn't meant to be, uni went down by 2 pts at the final siren.

Votes went to 5-cal mcnish, 4-chips, 3- weapons, 2- sarge, 1-blair.

The team has taken this loss as a wake up call, and the group have decided that there is to be no more drops in effort like this one for the season, and despite the bye, will continue to train at full capacity for 2 weeks in anticipation of the next opponent - Fremantle CBC.

Thirds

Uni 3rd's were at home in a must win game against Wesley Curtin. Having had considerable success in recent years against Wesley Curtin, and on the back of a solid win the week before against Whitfords, the side was confident going into the game despite their current poor win-loss record.

Due to a lack of clean drinking water and questionable hygiene standards in the eastern suburbs WC were forced to field one of the smaller teams seen in amateur footy this year. Despite this handicap they started the game brightly and had they learnt to kick like the Los Angeles police department could have held a handy break at quarter time.

The second quarter saw Uni recover from yet another slow start and began to work their way into the match. The first half ended with Uni holding a 1 point advantage in a low scoring match.

In the second half Uni's strong attack on the footy began to pay dividends as the game opened up a bit. Of particular note and the man that to many embodied this new found ferocity at the football was former veteran Robbie Wylie. In a dashing display of youthful vigor and vitality Robbie's flaming locks were seen streaming from the backline on numerous occasions snuffing out hopeful WC attacks and setting up forward foray's for Uni. His direct opponent was heard to remark after the game "You nailed me" however it was later revealed that this may have been a contractual obligation as part of Robbie's new sponsorship deal with Just For Men.

Uni finished the game very strongly to run out convincing winners and with a very winnable game this week against West Coast Cowan the side and it's legion of loyal supporters will be hoping to stay in the winner's circle for some time to come.

Dingoes

After a couple of games that were not much of a challenge for the Dingoes this weekend looked like it would pose much more of a challenge with Wesley Curtin winning recently by some fairly large margins. The Dingoes fielded possibly their strongest team this year and come bounce down time looked fired up for a big game against super tafe. Within the first 10 minutes it looked like the challenge we thought would be coming would not be this saturday, the dingoes started strongly and piled on a few quick goals.

For the next 2 quarters uni was easily the strongest team with the midfield winning most of the contests and the backline was brilliant all day but Bully up forward stole the show by marking and converting everything that came his way. Jords put the challenge to the Dingoes to get bull to 10 goals and get ourselves to 20 goals for the game which meant 3 more for bully and 6 more for the team. Super Tafe got a couple in the last quarter but the game was long gone for them when Bully put his 10th goal straight through from about 60 metres out while also getting us to our target of 20 for the game.

C-colts

A good day for the c-gulls as we improved our percentage considerably. The 206 to 1 score line was perhaps a bit kind to the WC side as we experimented with different players in different positions all day. With WC only having 15 players this left us to with 10 men on the bench at anyone time. Everyone played well with Wes Lefroy picking up the 5 votes.

There really isn't too much to say other than it was disappointing not to be tested; especially with a rematch with collegians just three weeks away. If we can maintain the excellent numbers we have had all season (There are regularly 10+ colters missing out each week) the boys will be able to set themselves a good launching pad for the finals with a top three spot a realistic goal.
